Solar Underground Pest Deterrent

March 2nd, 2009 by Edwin in Eco Gadgets, Garden Gadgets, Home Gadgets, Solar Powered Gear

You never know just what kind of underground pests you’re going to run into, so why not stay safe rather than sorry? The Solar Underground Pest Deterrent device won’t harm the environment in any way, and it won’t add to your monthly electricity bill since it comes with a built-in solar panel. Powered by the sun, it will help help drive away underground pests including moles, voles, and gophers.

The weatherproof anodized aluminum spike stakes into the ground, where it emits sonic vibrations every 30 seconds that irritate burrowing pests and compel them to disperse. The deterrent operates within a diameter of 94 1/2′, and the 4″ sq. solar panel charges an integrated battery during the day, even in low light and overcast conditions, so it operates both day and night. The panel fully charges within three hours in full sunlight conditions and will operate for up to eight hours on a full charge.

Nice to know that it comes with a replaceable rechargeable battery pack, all for $59.95 a pop. If dad’s an avid gardener and have been complaining about underground pests, why not get this for him?

Sanyo Eneloop Solar Light

February 9th, 2009 by Edwin in Eco Gadgets, Electronic Gadgets, Solar Powered Gear

The Sanyo Eneloop range is always famous for its long-lasting battery life, and here we have with another Eneloop device known as the Sanyo Eneloop Solar Light. As you can tell by its name, it receives its power from the sun, outputting lights in arranged LEDs for rooms/emergencies by functioning as a flashlight. In addition, the USB port works great to juice up all your other phones and gizmos that rely on USB connectivity without letting you waste a single cent on disposable batteries as long as you rely on clean solar energy. Depending on the amount of lights used, this will release around 9 to 50 hours of light from a full tank.

February 7th, 2009 by Edwin in Childrens Gadgets, Eco Gadgets, Robot Gadgets, Solar Powered Gear

Want to have a toy that goes on and on and on without the use of Energizer or Duracell batteries? That’s not a problem with the Solar Powered Orangutan, although it does look like a carved out piece of Lego from certain angles. All you need to do is set this Orangutan on a piece of string, expose it to some light and voila - it will get to work, climbing up to the very pinnacle according to its ability. You will need some assembly with this toy though, and it will take you approximately 20 minutes to complete the whole setup. The only tool you need? A simple screwdriver. $14.99 is the asking price for this piece of mindless fun.

Toyota’s Solar-powered Car

January 5th, 2009 by Mark R in Automotive Gadgets, Conceptual Gadgets, Eco Gadgets, Solar Powered Gear

About six months ago, we reported that Toyota was planning on putting solar panels on the Prius to power the air-conditioner. It has been recently been released that the famed Japanese motor company plans to release a car that is completely solar-powered.

As you can see on the photo, the solar panels are on the roof like solar panels of a house. This is only one way the car gets its power, as the company wants to supplement power by somehow attaching the car to the solar panels on the roofs of homes. This way, a car can be powered in a garage or parked outside.

Solar Keychain relies on the sun

December 17th, 2008 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Solar Powered Gear

While your keys won’t require batteries at this point in time, it is interesting to note that the Solar Keychain is able to store up excess energy harnessed from the sun so that your cell phone’s battery can remain juiced should you require to talk longer than usual.

Simply dangle this ultra-slim device from your keyring and you’ll have emergency power for your phone 24/7, wherever you may roam. Unless of course you leave your keys at home, in which case you’ll be in double trouble. Using the Solar Keychain is lemon squeezy. Simply plug it into your mobile using the relevant adaptor (loads included) and gawp in planet-hugging amazement as it pumps in around 15-25 minutes of extra talktime. That’s more than enough time to order a cab, talk vindaloo with the bloke down the curry house and send a few ‘ooh, me ‘ead’ style texts from the back of the taxi.

It will take approximately 10 hours for a full charge, so make sure you remember where you place the Solar Keychain before you head home from work lest you need to dig up a crowbar to break inside your home. Oh, and the Solar Keychain’s usefulness is not limited to just cell phones as it works with any other device that charges via USB as well. Available from Firebox for £14.95.

Voltaic Systems and their new Generator Solar Bag

December 10th, 2008 by Edwin in Eco Gadgets, PC Gadgets, Solar Powered Gear

We humans are extremely hard to please, but then again that could be a great trait that helps us pull through the rough times. Take for example, our need to do things much faster - it has led mankind from living in caves or foraging in forests to stay in huge metropolises over the millennia to where we are today, and in our quest to always better ourselves, new innovations and breakthroughs are occurring every single day. Same goes for gadgets and gizmos that are in the market - surely we won’t be content with just an iPod that plays music and comes with a black and white screen! See what we have today? The iPod touch in all its sleek glory. Well, the same goes for notebook bags as well - instead of offering a place that just totes your notebook and its accessories around, Voltaic Systems decided to take the plunge by unveiling its Generator solar bag that is able to harvest solar power to charge a notebook with less that a day’s worth of sun rays.

Shiro SQ-S PMP is Solar Powered

December 9th, 2008 by Mark R in Audio/Video Gadgets, Solar Powered Gear

I’m not sure if the world needs another type of PMP, but I will definitely give Shiro credit for trying something different.

Shiro has put a solar cell on the back of the SQ-S, which gives the user the option to charge the device with the power of the sun. Considering that power to PMPs is always an issue for mobile music, it is refreshing to see a PMP that does not require a wired charging method like an AC cord or USB cable.

The user has the option of using a USB cable if he or she wants to. Just to put it in perspective, it takes six hours with a “full sun” to charge the SQ-6, but only four hours with the USB. With a full charge, the SQ-S is capable of up to 38 hours of music playback and 10 hours of video playback.
