Earthbox- The No Fuss Gardening System

The Earthbox’s own tagline is a bit much: “The World’ Most Revolutionary Gardening System!” The black plastic boxes come with generally positive recommendations, but they’re not magic—their main trick is keeping a reservoir of water at the bottom, letting plants wick it up as they need it, while keeping the soil at the surface dry and hardy against bacteria and bugs.

While the brand-name Earthboxes aren’t terribly expensive—around $60, and that includes some soil and fertilizer—building a similar box yourself isn’t a huge undertaking, either. (Here’s another variant.) Cut apart one Rubbermaid tub, put its guts inside another, add some drain holes and a fill tube, and you’re on your way to big tomatoes and eggplants and cukes with a minimum of effort.

Iron Man Toy

There are just some characters that should not be cartoonized or turned into something cute, and Iron Man is one of them. Unfortunately, the cartoonization of this character in a cute toy format is not lost on Marvel’s technologically advanced suited hero, and he is now available in Japan for approximately $40. Looks to us as though Iron Man is carrying a baby inside his growing belly, which is extremely wrong across many levels. Still, there are some people out there who love collecting such items, so who are we to classify what’s cute or not?

Olympus E-450 Compact DSLR

Hard pressed to improve upon its well-regarded E-420, which Olympus touted as the “world’s smallest digital SLR” back when it was announced last year, the camera maker didn’t stray too far from its existing formula when it announced the new E-450 today.

Features:

  • compact body as the slim E-420
  • including a 10-megapixel
  • 17.3×33mm Live MOS sensor
  • 3-point autofocus; 2.7-inch
  • 230,000-pixel LCD
  • 3.5 fps continuous-shooting speed
  • a sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 1,600
  • new TruePic III+ image processor
  • a brighter LCD
  • an increase in the maximum recordable images in continuous shooting mode (from six to eight RAW)
  • addition of three of the special-Warhol-esque pop art, a pinhole camera effect, and a soft-focus effect)

In fact, in order to differentiate the E-450, Olympus is only offering the camera as a two-lens kit with 14mm-42mm (28mm-84mm equivalent) f3.5-f5.6 lens and a 40-150mm (80mm-300mm equivalent) f4.0-5.6 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens) for $699.99. The camera is slated to begin shipping in July, but in a nod to its entry-level, ease-of-use message, Olympus is launching the E-450 on May 9 on QVC.

German researchers show off steering wheel-mounted OLED

We've already seen OLED displays that promise to squeeze into a rearview mirror and other parts of a vehicle, and it looks like Germany's CARO research association has now found yet another place to stick one: right in the middle of the steering wheel. As you can see above, that would effectively replace the center emblem in the steering wheel (the gauges are just for show, apparently), which the researchers say would open up a whole host of new design possibilities for auto manufacturers -- for instance, having the center emblem light up when the door opens. They're also quick to point out that the thin nature of the OLED wouldn't affect the airbag, and power consumption would, of course, be at a minimum. As you might have guessed, however, there's no word on any automakers that have signed up just yet, although CARO does also have a new highly-readable, orange emitting OLED suitable for in-dash use for those looking to keep things a bit more conventional.

D.I.Y. wireless power project unleashes your inner mad scientist

Before he was the patron saint of electric cars and GPUs, Nikola Tesla invented the AC motor, the Tesla coil (or, as he called it, the "coil"), and demonstrated that power could be transferred wirelessly. A hundred-plus years later, companies like Solaren Corp are angling to beam electricity down to earth from outer space -- quite possibly solving our energy crisis with science fiction means that would even make ol' Nicky T. look twice. But why should the big companies have all the fun? You too can experiment with wireless power, albeit on a significantly smaller scale, with merely a square wave generator, some coiled wire, a 60 watt bulb, and a few other low priced thingamabobs. Don't believe us? Hit that read link and see for yourself.

Most importantly, 3G access has been disabled, meaning you'll only be able to get your Sling on over WiFi -- a serious blow to the app and a huge change from the way SlingPlayer Mobile works on other platforms -- and likely a verification that either Apple or AT&T took serious issue with the bandwidth load imposed by this type of app on the HSPA network. Despite the restriction, Sling will be charging a whopping $29.99 for the download; in exchange for your troubles, though, they've decided to lift the ban on older Slingboxes, with the caveat that they won't be officially supported if you run into trouble.

We've had a chance to play with the app, and it certainly gets the job done -- we just wish it worked a little better. Even on WiFi, control feels laggy, and there's no native guide (though there's an icon to quickly pull up your set-top box's guide). When you're in letterbox mode, you've got black bars around all four sides of the image, meaning that the app isn't taking full advantage of the phone's display; we're hopeful this'll be fixed in a future release, though. Happily, we think Sling really nailed the app's UI -- the on-screen translucent controls are pretty cool and generally work well without obscuring the view. Look to grab your own copy some time between 12:01AM and 6:01AM EDT tomorrow morning, and in the meantime, check out our gallery.

Update: The app's now available, so get ready to part with $30 (and to not part with your 3G bandwidth -- you certainly won't need it here). Thanks, everyone!

AirTran brings Gogo in-flight WiFi to every single flight

Listen up, jet-setters -- AirTran Airways just got a lot more attractive. Starting this summer, this very airline will become the "world's first" (Virgin America will have its comparatively small fleet of 28 fully equipped by Memorial Day) to equip all of its aircraft with in-flight WiFi, and when we say "all," we mean "all." Much like the half dozen other Aircell airline partners, AirTran is also utilizing Gogo technology, but it's doing so across its entire fleet of Boeing 737 and 717 aircraft. If all goes to plan, all 136 AirTran planes will be broadband-enabled by "mid-summer," and as with other Gogo-equipped planes, patrons will be asked to pony up $12.95 for access on flights over three hours and $9.95 for jaunts that are three hours or less. Of note, "handheld devices" can hop online for just $7.95 regardless of flight length, though we get the idea that VoIP calling will still be disabled.

Hawk WiFi robot is probably more fun to hang around with than your friends

Hawk is a humanoid, autonomous, wireless, and handsome robot made by Canadian company Dr. Robot. He's got WiFi, a GPS navigation system, dual cameras in his moveable, animated head, and a host of other cameras and sensors that keep him trucking along. Designed with education in mind, Hawk's skill set is a bit limited, but his hands are pretty impressive. Hawk is on sale now, and while there's no price listed for the bot, base parts of the robot are in the range of $5,000. Video of Hawk beating the skins after the break: yes, we're aware of the fact that he's not exactly John Bonham but, then again -- neither are any of your friends, right?

Paul McCartney's Rock Band Höfner bass gets pictured, lacks genuineness

Sigh. It's like making a Jag-Stang for righties -- it just ain't right, kids. Hot on the heels of seeing the other special edition Rock Band axes designed for the forthcoming Beatles title comes this, Sir Paul McCartney's Rock Band Höfner bass replica. At a glance, most everything looks to be legitimate, but considering that it's clearly tailored for those who lean right, it'll never be authentic in our minds. Yeah, that's our southpaw pride we're wearing on our sleeves -- what of it?

TomTom GO 740 LIVE impressions

Way back at CES, TomTom proudly announced that its GO 740 LIVE personal navigation device would be its very first "connected GPS" to hit the United States of America. Just last month, the company announced that said unit was finally shipping to anxious consumers. Hardware wise, there's nothing here outside of the ordinary, but it's the little extras that make all the difference in the world here -- or, at least that's what TomTom wants you to think. Is this $400 navigator worth the up front costs, let alone the monthly fee to keep it connected? Head on past the break for our take.

SGI name lives on after $42.5 million sale to Rackable Systems

As you know, Rackable Systems was originally hoping to acquire the one-time king of the 3D set for $25 million (with some speculating that even that was a bit much), but it looks like the bankruptcy judges had other plans. Now that the dust has settled (and a check has been cut for almost twice the original asking price) it looks like the two companies will finally merge, forming an outfit called... SGI. The newly minted Silicon Graphics International hopes to combine the strong server business of Rackable with the original Silicon Graphics Inc. name (and overseas service contracts), inspiring the same sort of technological alchemy that once brought the iconic brand to the silver screen by way of such fine cinematic fare as First Kid. In addition, SGI plans continued development and support for the existing Silicon Graphics and Rackable product lines. Quite frankly, we really don't care what they do, as long as they bring back the Indigo -- back in the day we would have killed for one of those bad boys.

JVC debuts 8K / 4K prototype camcorders, moviemakers drool

Aw, snap. Just when you thought the 4K market couldn't get any more dominated by RED and the gang, along comes JVC to shake things up. For reasons unknown, the company has chosen now (and not a few weeks back at NAB) to unleash its prototype 4K and 8K camcorders, both of which boast D-ILA technology and can capture clips at a downright mind-blowing 8,912 x 4,320 or 3,840 x 2,160 resolution. There's also a more "compact" sibling which does 4K only, but even it provides plenty of pixels to zoom and pan in unprecedented clarity on. So JVC -- you, us, CEDIA 2009. It's a date, cool?

Update: More details here. Thanks, Geoff!

Lenovo gazes into its netbook crystal ball, predicts Windows 7, 3G, blue skies with a chance of rain

Lenovo gazes into its netbook crystal ball, predicts Windows 7, touchscreens, blue skies with a chance of rain
Wonder what the future of the netbook is -- or at least what's coming after Intel's roadmap runs out of paper? Lenovo's in-house analyst Matt Kohut may have the answer, chatting with TECH.BLORGE to make some entirely sensible predictions about the next netbooks. He indicates that touchscreens and the like will become increasingly popular, helping to drive the popularity of Windows 7 and its top-notch touch support, and continuing the move away from Linux that Lenovo identified back in 2007. He also thinks netbooks will start to get bigger, pushing the 12- to 14-inch range, a trend we're already seeing the beginnings of with rumors of ASUS and its supposed 11.6-inch Eee PC. Finally, he figures machines will get even cheaper than they already are, and that 3G will be more or less standard soon. It's challenging stuff, this prediction business, but feel free to try your hand at it below.

eASIC eDV9200 H.264 codec promises HD for all devices

We've already got HD in places that the cast of Step by Step would've sworn was never possible way back when, but eASIC is far from satisfied. To that end, it's introducing a new H.264 codec aimed to bring high-def capabilities to all manners of devices, including (but certainly not limited to) toys, baby monitors, public transportation, wireless video surveillance and wireless webcams. The highly integrated eDV9200 is said to "dramatically lower the cost of entry into the high-definition video market, enabling a new class of low-cost applications to fully leverage the benefits offered by HD technology." Best of all, these guys aren't just blowing smoke, as the chip -- which captures streaming data directly from a CMOS sensor, compresses it, and transfers it to a host system or to a variety of storage devices -- is priced at just $4.99 each in volume. HD oven timers, here we come!

WinFast HPVC1100 is world's first external SpursEngine encoder

Toshiba's Cell-based SpursEngine HD video co-processor has made plenty of appearances within monstrous gaming machines, but this marks the very first time where it has stepped out of the laptop chassis and into a portable enclosure. Granted, the language barrier is killing us here, but it seems as if the Leadtek WinFast HPVC1100 wraps a SpursEngine encoder into an on-the-go solution that can be lugged around with a standard laptop in order to churn through video while on set, in the field or on the road. Other specs include 128MB of RAM, a PCI-Express slot and a weight of 1.54 pounds; there's no word just yet on pricing or availability. One more shot is after the break.

Samsung's 30nm NAND chips give birth to 32GB memory cards

Samsung's 30nm NAND chips give birth to 32GB memory cards
Remember the halcyon days of 2007, when Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" rocked the charts and Samsung revealed its 30-nm manufacturing process, promising a 128GB memory card in every digicam? We're still not quite there yet, but the company is finally releasing the first cards to utilize that manufacturing process, the biggest offering 32GB of storage goodness. That's twice the capacity of its 40nm cards, which never made it past the 16GB mark. 30nm moviNAND chips are in production now in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB sizes, and hopefully will hit retail before that 33 megapixel Mamiya we've had on order finally ships.

Sony X-series OLED Walkman priced, hitting UK tomorrow

We don't see an official press release yet but Pocket-lint and other UK sites are claiming that Sony's OLED Walkman will hit the UK high streets starting tomorrow. The hotly anticipated X-series Walkman will be priced at £209 for the 16GB model or £279 for the 32GB model. We'd translate those numbers to US dollars but we don't want to scare the natives with the UK markup for consumer electronics. We'll update you with official US numbers just as soon as they're out.

Sanyo's LP-WXU700 projector is first to stream HD video over 802.11n WiFi

True, Sanyo's LP-WXU700 is limited to a WXGA (1280 x 800) pixel image. But it's still the world's first to transmit that video over 802.11b/g/n (draft 2.0). Grabbing wireless video off your Vista PC is a snap thanks to the projector's Windows Embedded CE 6.0 software with Video Streaming Function that links back to Vista's Network Projector Function. Spec-wise we're looking at a 0.74-inch 3LCD panel capable of projecting a 100-inch image at a distance of 2.5 to 4-meters at 3,800 lumens with a 500:1 contrast ratio. Sanyo even tosses in a single HDMI jack in addition to the usual analog inputs. While, it's targeted at offices and schools, it wouldn't surprise us to see this ¥62,790 (about $642) projector show up in make-shift home theaters and gaming rooms when it launches in June.

Update: Oops, dropped a 0 from the price. It's actually ¥627,900 or about $6,445 according to the native English press release -- but even that doesn't sound right.

Intel reveals notebook and netbook plans for the rest of the year

Intel reveals notebook and netbook plans for the rest of the year
The netbook formula hasn't evolved much since its inception, still offering largely the same configuration and performance as it ever has. That likely won't change until the end of the summer, with Intel announcing that it's even thinking about retiring the newer Atom N280 processor and GN40 chipset entirely, leaving the older and more common N270 with its 945GSE as the main choice until September, when the new Pineview Atom chips might finally hit production. The company is also creating a whitebox N270-based 8.9-inch netbook that it's shopping around to resellers, again not doing any favors to fans of variety. Moving up to skinny 12- to 13-inch notebooks, Intel is still pushing its CULV architecture, and has its dual-core Calpella platform poised for inclusion in anything with a targeted MSRP of $1,200 and above -- and a release date sometime after the third quarter. That's a few months too late to catch the needy college freshman crowd, Intel.

Corsair's speedy P256 256GB solid state drive now shipping

Remember that then-named S256 we saw sneak out right around a month ago? Yeah, that bad boy's finally on sale, and it's shipping as we speak from a number of trustworthy e-tailers. Said SSD -- which now goes formally by P256 -- packs specially selected Samsung MLC flash memory and a sophisticated Samsung Controller IC, coupled with 128MB of cache memory and Native Command Queuing (NCQ) support for stutter-free performance. By the books, this one can reach speeds of up to 220MB/sec (read) and 200MB/sec (write), though you can bet you'll be paying for the haste. We're seeing it on sale for around $658 online, though Dell's listing shows a wicked steep $851.99. Either way, ouch. Full release is after the break.
