Hands-On Review: Sony Ericsson W595 Slider Phone

May 5th, 2009

Following the bandwagon of innovative phones with latest technologies, it’s quite evident that users appreciate phones with multiple advanced functionalities. The newest phone that joins the Sony Ericsson music phone brigade, the W595 slider, is among a few entrants to bring in an ultimate multimedia experience.

Sony Ericsson W595 Phone

Well, we would like to call it a W580i look-alike apart from a few upgradations. Amidst the several color-combo choices, we got the one imbued in active blue with turquoise. We’d really like to know when Sony Ericsson plans to go sleeker. The looks of the phone weren’t much appealing, but as they say never judge a book by its cover, we were interested in what it holds within.

As a famous quote says our life is frittered away by detail… Read the rest of this story >>

Altec Lansing Backbeat106 In-ear-headphone Reviewed

May 5th, 2009

Altec Lansing Backbeat106

Today, it can be rightly said that music trespasses the boundaries to bind the world closer. With so many new innovative, portable music devices introduced and much more on its way, the headphones take the center stage and are of great importance. Here we get to lay our hands on yet another Altec Lansing headphone and this time it’s the Backbeat106.

This noise cancellation headphone is aimed at all those who listen to music while on the go. At the first glance, the headphone looked quite pretty in a golden metallic enclosure with a rubber covering half the enclosure and a unique cloth cable. Sporting a Snug-fit design, it is very much light in weight and we tried wearing it both the ways, straight in the ear as well as molded over-the-ear. The cloth cable Read the rest of this story >>

Nintendo DSi

With the Gameboy, Nintendo revolutionized handheld gaming and conquered the world. And with the DS/DS Lite, they pretty much did it again. The DSi is not the next revolution, but it’s an intriguing evolution.

The DSi has been out in Japan since November, and it comes to US stores this Sunday for $170. It still plays the normal DS games, plus it supports new iPhone-app-like DSiWare titles, captures digital pictures/audio and utilizes SD storage.

In terms of specs, there are a few notable upgrades.

  • screens are 17% bigger than the last DS
  • two .3MP cameras (one facing front, one back) that take shots to internal memory or newly-supported SD cards
  • an ARM9E CPU clocked at 133 MHz (in place of the original ARM9/66MHz)
  • 16 MB of RAM

The DSi could could make DS gaming into something frighteningly granular. Then again, $2-$5 DSiWare quality already looks to outpace the games you get on the iPhone for the same amount.

Concord C1 Quantum Gravity watch

We’re still trying to wrap our heads around some of the indecipherable verbiage the company has used to describe it, but it looks like Concord’s C1 QuantumGravity watch is at last very much real, and one step closer to actually being available (to a very select few).

As you can see above, while there’s still a few finishing touches remaining, the watch itself is pretty faithful to all those early renders that the company has been teasing us with since January, right down to the magical “fluorescent nanoparticle liquid” that’s used to indicate the life remaining in the 3-day power reserve. Those curious about all things mechanical and tiny can also get a look at the complete build process by hitting up the read link below, or simply head on past the break for a video full of much spinning and unnecessary Matrix-style imagery.

T-Mobile's Magic / Sapphire / myTouch / G2 getting 5 megapixel cam?

It's pretty unusual for a manufacturer to take a global model and swap out a component as significant as a camera for one carrier, but it looks like that might just happen with T-Mobile USA's myTouch -- or G2, or Magic, or Sapphire, or whatever the heck it ends up being called. Boy Genius Report's leaked picture of the back of the carrier-branded handset prominently says "5.0," and since it's safe to assume it's not packing a 5.0-liter V8, this is probably referring to sensor res. That would be a marked upgrade from the 3.2 megapixels launching on the Magic everywhere else -- and interestingly, this kinda falls in line with T-Mobile USA's seemingly active effort to launch high-megapixel devices across the lineup over the past several months. This is more solid evidence than a spec sheet -- since spec sheets have a tendency to be filled with fallacies and typos -- but we'll hold off on saying this is a lock until the phone launches.

The Carphone who are usually very accurate with their dates have slated the LG GD900 Crystal to arrive in mid-May this year. You may remember that it was first thought the GD900 actually had a crystal made transparent keypad, this has been proven to be glass. Nevertheless we look forward to trying it out as this will be the first ever to be seen on a mobile and as we’ve featured before in some videos, this keypad sports some interesting features.

Leaked and Speculated, Operating Systems »

[27 Apr 2009 | One Comment]

This is not at all surprising to hear, since developers these days are so willing to share the latest build of operating systems as soon as they get it. This latest leak shows that the recent new Snow Leopard build (10A335) sports a handy screen grab feature, this new native ability links in with QuickTime to “record” your on-screen activities. I suppose it then convenient makes a video and saves it on your desktop just like the current screenshot capture function that our Mac OS Xs’ have. Again, this in my view is another thoughtful function that Microsoft will never think of.

With the high capacitance in the Caps, these cards can stable system operations, produce reliable power and superior overlocking margins. The low Equivalent Series Resistance creates higher ripple current with high power efficiency. This helps reduce the temperature by up to 15°C and 8°C of the GPU and memory modules respectively in the ENGTX285.

PCs can be switched on even at freezing temperatures of under -15°C due Read the rest of this story >>

Google released a new software called O3D yesterday. It is a broswer plug-in which will bring accelerated 3D graphics to browsers such as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE), Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari , Linux and Google’s Chrome. Google O3D works on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Google hopes that the technology will be built directly into browsers eventually.

Google OCD allows developers’ Web-based JavaScript programs to tap directly into a computer’s graphics card chip, which means better games and other applications. Google has uploaded a video demo on its blog post with some information about Google O3D.

Kogan GPS Watch

Last week it was their first netbook; before that, Android smartphones. Now Kogan have set their sights on our wrists, but be warned: you’ll have had to do some serious arm exercises before wearing the Kogan GPS Watch. Billed as “the most feature packed watch on the market”, it’s a combination Bluetooth, GPS, pedometer, altimeter timepiece, among other things.

Kogan suggest you could use the GPS Watch to record your exercise and plot your routes on Google Earth; alternatively you can keep a track of positioning while mobile, to make sure you don’t misplace your car. It also works as a temperature sensor and speedometer, together with having the usual sports watch functionality of alarm, stopwatch and timer.

Since it has integrated Bluetooth you can also pair the watch with a laptop, smartphone or PDA, making it a tethered GPS receiver. In fact the one thing Kogan don’t mention is exactly how much it weighs or what its exact measurements are. The Kogan GPS Watch is available now, priced at AUS$129 (US$85).

Amadana SAL Pocket Video Recorder

Japanese manufacturer Amadana has released its SAL pocket video recorder that not only records your favorite memories in MPEG4 format, it is also able to capture 3-megapixel stills with its CMOS image sensor. All these are crammed into a tiny body that measures 54mm x 95mm x 12mm, tipping the scales at a mere 85 grams to make this one of the more pocket friendly devices to date.

Too bad the 2GB internal memory cannot be augmented by any memory card slot, leaving the USB port as the only means to transfer data over to your computer once it is filled to the brim. No idea on pricing though, but this looks set to be a Japan-only device.

Fusion-io ioDrive Duo - World’s Fastest SSD

Fusion-io’s original ioDrive was stupid fast, but the next generation makes even that look pathetic. Try 1.5GB sustained read speeds and 1.4GB sustained write speeds.

Fusion-io has also blown the slot capacity of their previous model out of the water with versions of the PCI Express Duo available in 160GB, 320GB, 640GB and 1.28TB sizes. Three of the four versions will be available starting in April with the 1.28GB version slated for the second half of 2009. If you are wondering how much it will cost, that probably means you cant afford it. Specifics have not been made available, but we are talking tens of thousands of dollars on the high end here.

If you recognize Fusion-io, it’s the company Woz just joined as Chief Scientist. Since he just joined, we doubt he had anything to do with the ioDrive’s inception and production, but he’ll most likely have a hand in doing their upcoming products.

holographic-storage

Brian Lawrence leads G.E.’s holographic storage program. The most powerful way of data storage is on its way.

General Electrics is working on something incredible. Even though it has only had laboratory success at the moment, if all goes well, we are looking at a whole new way of storage. The goal is by 2011-2012 that their micro holographic storage become a reality.

If they want this system to work it is going to have to work in products that can be mas produced at affordable prices. This new era of storage relies on smaller, less complicated holograms. For those who are not familiar with the word Holography it is an optical process that stores 3D images (credit cards for example), and can also stores the 1’s and 0’s of digital data as well. After that the data is encoded in light patterns that are stored in light sensitive material. These holograms works like tiny mirrors, that do their job reflecting light patterns when a laser shoots its laser at them. That data can be retrieved and deciphered.

Sony HX1 takes lots of pictures really fast

Sony’s whizbang camera Sony Hx1 features (HD video aside), like iSCN Advance or the anti-handheld twilight mode (which gives you a clear shot in low light, where usually a handheld camera would give you a blurry mess) all use the same basic technology, just applied differently for each feature. They all take a burst of shots really quickly—and combine them or pick out the right shot to come up with a clear one.

The sweep panorama shooting process is surprisingly easy, the way it should be. You flip to panorama mode on the dial, and when you press the shutter down, a scrollbar pops up on the bottom that starts at the left and slides to the right as you swing the camera. On the camera, all of the results look really smooth, but we’ll have to see one at full resolution before we’re truly blown away.

26novel_190Even though it is only a pro-type for the moment, this way of seeing things looks interesting.SBG Labs is one of many trying to achieve this technology. These glasses are just a little larger than many chic pairs of glasses, but these glasses feature something different than the traditional pair. They feature tiny projectors and optics hidden on the side of the frame.

Why is it called heads up? because you will always be able to look through them and see the real world - but you also be able to see, on an overlay image, virtual information like an electronic map or an arrow showing the correct way to a destination.Another cool feature is that if you forget a friends name these glasses will help you remember the name if your friend, so if you have a forgetful spell, with these glasses you will get away with it. good thing that these contact lenses are also being developed for mobile displays.Nowadays, it is certainly a plus is it gets along with our cell phone.

Seagate Free Agent Theater HD Media Player

The Free Agent Theater HD Media Player uses composite, S-Video and component video inputs, coaxial out for Dolby Digital surround sound. Its integrated dock is for the FreeAgent Go, what Seagate says is the world’s thinnest external HDD, but there’s a USB port for other storage devices, in case you’re fresh out of FreeAgents. Its on-screen interface can display either file/folder trees or previews and thumbnails. And because of the Theater HD’s dual-channel video converter, you can upconvert all your video files to 720p or 1080i. There’s no 1080p support, and besides, there’s no HDMI, though Seagate says something like that will come along later this year.

As for the on-screen UI and accompanying remote, there are also easy one-touch buttons that will allow you to perform simple tasks automatically, such as starting a slideshow of photos and music, simultaneously, with just one button. Even DVD files, ripped onto your external hard drive, can be played simply by going to the DVD’s folder and clicking the play or menu button on the remote, without having to hunt for the actual video file. Seagate says the system supports MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 formats, and DIVX files with video resolutions for NTSC, PAL and HD up to 1080i, and that it even supports subtitles. It does not, however, handle H.264.

Available on March 4, the Seagate FreeAgent Theater HD will sell for $130. It is also bundled with a 250GB FreeAgent Go drive for $230, or better still, a 500GB model for $280.

Nano Breathe Checks For Diseases

Applied Nanodetectors Ltd. (AND) from the UK is currently parading a prototype cell phone at the International Nanotechnology Exhibition & Conference that is able to detect various diseases simply by analyzing the user’s breath. The phone itself is made by Nokia, featuring AND’s chip inside that features integrated sensors which are able to detect minute traces of different gases including CO2, NOx and ammonia (NH3). Once detected, the chip will get to work by analyzing the composition of the user’s breath while tabulating the density of each gas. The results will be compared against characteristics of various diseases in order to detect whether one is possibly suffering from a certain type of disease or not. Sounds cool, but the phone is still a long way off from being commercially available.

Samsung officially unveiled its Show W7900 cell phone that will feature Texas Instruments’ integrated DLP Pico technology. The Show W7900 is also known as the i7410, and will come with the built-in chipset and compact projector which is able to throw an image from the handset to a screen or wall at up to 50″ in size, although don’t expect this to work great outdoors or under bright light conditions as it will probably perform in a similar manner as that of earlier generation projectors.

Features:

  • OLED touchscreen display
  • Flick gestures support
  • 5 megapixel camera
  • Built-in speakers

We do hope Samsung has plans to release a North American version of the i7410 instead of letting the Koreans have all the fun.

Garmin Asus Nuvifone

Forget Eee Phones: Garmin and Asus have created a strategic alliance to design, build and sell co-branded Nuvifones, starting with the original one—now called G60—and moving towards Windows Mobile and Android.

Yes, the delayed Nuvifone is still scheduled to come out in the first half of 2009. There’s no carrier or price announcement yet—Garmin says they are in active negotiations with GSM carriers in North America (so, AT&T and T-Mobile) and in Europe—but now it will be named the Garmin-Asus Nuvifone G60, and will be the first in a line of Garmin-Asus smartphones. It will be on display and ready for groping at next month’s Mobile World Congress (formerly known as 3GSM).

It also makes it clear that Garmin is done toeing the water of the cellphone business, and is ready to jump in, holding the hand of Asus. The only casualty here is probably going to be the G60. If it were Garmin’s only offering, maybe people who love Garmin would go for it, but now, even those Garmin lovers know that better cooler things are coming—with choices from Windows Mobile and Android. Here’s hoping the G60 is cheap and village-idiot simple.

Garmin FR Fitness Watch

Watches today do more than watches could do in the past. I have seen watches that have cell phones built-in and watches that connect to the Internet. Garmin is a brand closely associated with GPS devices, but the company has a wider range of products and has introduced a new watch.

It would be easy to assume that the new watch offers GPS capability, but it doesn’t. The watch monitors data from your workouts and saves it for wireless transmission to your computer for analysis. The watch is compatible with any ANT+ fitness device like heart rate monitors, foot pods, or home and gym equipment.

The FR60 comes in men’s and women’s versions that can track and record data for up to 15 hours and 100 laps of detailed exercise data. The watch is also water resistant for tracking workouts involving swimming. Once data is recorded, it is sent to a Garmin software application for analysis. Pricing and availability information is unknown.
