Samsung's Centrino 2-powered Q320 and R522 caught on display

Dutch-based portablegear has managed to get a close-up look at Samsung's Intel Centrino 2-packing laptops, the 13.4-inch Q320 and 15.6-inch R522, and boy are they a beaut. The former's sporting an NVIDIA GeForce G105M and three USB ports, while the latter uses an unknown graphics card, four USB ports, and an USB/eSata combo. Both feature Intel Windows Vista Home Premium and six-cell batteries. While UK site Register Hardware pegged the release date for sometime this month, pg says they're due out sometime in May or June, and neither give any indication of a release window for US. We've also got a mention here of laptops R620 and R720, but unfortunately we've got no information on the models beyond that.

NYC cabbies could have cellphone use blocked while driving... but probably not

The Taxi and Limousine Commission of New York City (also known as the TLC) is considering some changes to the way that taxis and their drivers will operate in the future as part of its "Taxicab Passenger Enhancement Program." Among the wild ideas being floated is one that would "block" anyone in the front seat from using a cellphone -- most notably, of course -- the driver. Driving while using a handset is already illegal in New York, but this measure would apparently kill the ability to use a hands-free device as well. The TLC is trying to have an open discussion with New Yorkers on its website about other possible ways to make taxi rides more... enjoyable "in the future." We're betting this one will never happen but hey -- you never know. Our suggestion? Stop acting like we asked you to cart us to the gates of hell when we tell you we need to go to Brooklyn.

Engadget's 5th birthday giveaway, part 2: win one of two mystery Xbox 360 packages!

Like the Optimus Maximus, the Xbox 360 is a gadget that's been around on Engadget almost as long as... well, the site itself. Remember that exciting live launch coverage we did back in 2005? Now that was good, clean fun. Anyhow, without further ado, we're happy to present part 2 of Engadget's birthday giveaway session: a mystery Xbox 360 package. We can't tell you what's in the box here, but we can tell you that it's totally awesome. The best part? We've got not one, but two separate prizes to give away! Don't miss out -- you'll kick yourself if you do.

All you've got to do is let us know what your favorite post from the last five years has been in the comments below.

  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.

iPhone OS 3.0 beta 3 goes live

No details on what's new just yet, but iPhone OS 3.0 beta 3 has just hit Apple's servers for registered, card-carrying members of the Dev Center -- a nice release cadence since the new platform was first announced. More as we flesh it out!

[Via Boy Genius Report]

Update: Alright, well, we've played with it -- as many of you have -- and the update seems cosmetically identical to beta 2. We'd argue that things generally feel smoother and snappier, but the difference is almost imperceptible; go ahead and upgrade if you're chilling on beta 2, but don't expect sunshine and moonbeams with this release.

Zune rumors heat up, MS getting ready to launch Zune software on phones?

Yeah, something is definitely up in Zuneland. Not only did images of the Zune HD leak out late last week, today AdWeek says that Microsoft's auditioning three major ad agencies for the launch of a new mobile service called "Pink" -- which is the project codename for Zune software on mobile phones. No, this doesn't mean any of those Tegra-powered Zunephone rumors are coming true -- it's far more likely that Microsoft is finally gearing up to re-launch Zune as the preferred media software and service for Windows Mobile, a plan Steve Ballmer's been hinting at for ages now. Remember, Microsoft has to keep its large stable of Windows Mobile hardware manufacturers happy, and launching a hyped new phone of its own with a Zune-based OS would basically be perceived as stabbing a billion-dollar business in the back -- not something you want to do when most of your partners are also deep in the Android game. On the other hand, you don't audition three huge ad agencies just to launch a Zune app on busted ol' WinMo, so there could be something big cooking -- if you forced us to throw caution to the wind and just guess, what we'd want to see is that $500m Danger acquisition pay off in the form of a reskinned consumer-oriented edition of Windows Mobile that integrates Zune services, running not only on a touchscreen Zune HD, but a variety of phones from third-party partners. Wishful thinking? You bet -- probably even crazy thinking -- but it would certainly shake things up, and that's never a bad thing. We'll see how it plays out -- care to share your dream Zune strategy in the meantime?

Motorola building Android-based cable boxes for Japan's KDDI?

Don't know why the Motorola rumors are flying hot and heavy today, but right on top of that connected GPS whisper comes word that the struggling device manufacturer is being tapped to build a new version of KDDI's multifaceted Au Box set-top unit that runs Android instead of the previous custom Linux build. The Au Box, if you'll recall, is a trick little IPTV box with a DVD drive that can rip audio and video and transcode it for transfer or streaming to your cellphone -- kind of like a more flexible Slingbox that costs $3/month for KDDI subscribers. Definitely interesting, especially since Android could make browsing and email extremely easy to implement as well -- hey Moto, maybe you want to ditch your current garbage Stateside cable box lineup and start shipping these things at home?

Update: Turns out there's no Android here at all, according to Moto. Instead it's running on KreaTV platform. Is it just us or did this thing just lose about 50 megafonzies on the cool-o-meter?

Raleigh, North Carolina buses get on-board DTV

Planning to hop on a bus in Raleigh, North Carolina anytime soon? Then there's a chance you could be treated to an added distraction during your trip, as the city has just rolled out its first CAT bus equipped with mobile DTV, which looks to be one of the first projects resulting from those MPH tests that took place last year. This little bit of magic also comes courtesy of a little help from LG and Harris Corp., who are supplying the displays and mobile transmission equipment for the pilot program, which will be expanded to five buses by August, with another 20 planned for the second phase that'll run though August 2010. Of course, your viewing options will be somewhat limited, with a simulcast of local station WRAL apparently the only channel on tap, along with some weather information and, of course, a healthy dose of advertising.

Medion's Atom-powered E1211 and E1215 make the scene

If you're a resident of the European Union (or just a big fan) you might like to know that Medion's back with another nondescript, low-priced laptop or two. Understated sequels to the Mini E1210, both the E1211 and E1215 sport a 10-inch display, Intel Atom processor, 160GB hard drive, Windows XP Home, webcam, Bluetooth, and WiFi, and weigh a mere 1.25 kilograms -- and the latter also rocks integrated UMTS. According to Portable Gear, these guys are expected to fall into the €400-500 price range, rearing their heads in retail outlets such as Aldi, Hema, Action, Gamma and Karwei. Hit that read link for some more exciting pics.

Engadget's 5th birthday giveaway, part 1: win an Optimus Maximus keyboard!

When you hit the ripe old age of 5, you start to look back upon the years with a certain wistful nostalgia. We'd be lying if we said we didn't get just a little bit misty-eyed thinking about the Optimus Maximus. Like so many of the gadgets we've seen, we followed this little guy from its early design stages, right up into a full hands-on with the quasi-mythical piece of gear. So, it's not without a small amount of sadness that we release this keyboard back into the wild, where it belongs, where a new user will be confused and frustrated with how hard it is to type on.

All you've got to do is let us know what your favorite post from the last five years has been in the comments below.

Note: We've bolded the above statement, since it seems like you guys aren't following the rules.

Motorola looking to produce a connected GPS unit?

Motorola's navigation line certainly isn't the firms most notable, but the Garmins and TomToms of the world are probably taking notice after an intriguing quote from product line manager Blake Bullock. According to TWICE, Mr. Bullock stated that Moto was "absolutely making a bigger play" in the PND arena. Specifically, he mentioned that it could "bring something new to the table with Motorola's vast experience in wireless connectivity," noting that it has "aspirations to combine the best aspects of 3G smartphones with PNDs [to] create optimized experiences for consumers." 'Course, we've no clue as to when, where and how the company will get its hands dirty with a web-savvy GPS unit, but considering its current state of affairs, we'd say yesterday would be a great time to get things rolling.

LaCie's Rugged XL: 1TB of ready-for-anything storage

Clearly LaCie's going for that "timeless" look, 'cause the Rugged XL looks precisely like the original Rugged that launched over three years ago. The drive, which was unsurprisingly designed by Neil Poulton, touts a durable aluminum casing with external and internal shock absorbers, USB 2.0 and eSATA connectors along with a software suit to handle your backups. Packed within is a single 1TB drive, and externally, there's a "warm orange LED strip" to either keep you informed of drive status or just look stupendously fashionable, one. It's up for grabs today (or it should be soon, anyway) for $159.99, and no, the orange exterior cannot be swapped for a non-DOT-approved hue.

iriver P7 unboxing and review

We've been getting friendly with iriver's latest touchscreen masterpiece over the past few days, and have a few impressions to share. In many ways, though, the P7 is exactly what the pictures and spec sheet make it out to be: great design, great specs, few surprises, and little in the way of "interesting" functionality. While the Apples and Microsofts of the world keep on merging the world of PMPs with PDAs with phones, iriver seems content here to build a "mere" media player and leave it at that. Read our full impressions after the break.

Beatles Rock Band bundle will boast Höfner bass, Ludwig-branded drums

Not really surprising to hear, but exciting none the less... according to a teaser email sent out to people on The Beatles: Rock Band mailing list -- the special edition bundle will include a custom branded Höfner bass and Ludwig drums. The email also mentions other "custom" content, which we are hoping will be either a Rickenbacker guitar like the one Lennon often used or a gigantic Harrison-esque moustache / beard combo. We're just going to have to wait it out together guys -- it's not expected until September 9th -- so let's chill and enjoy the video after the break.

Prototype Sanyo projector throws up 1080p at near point-blank range

Sanyo's had a knack for pumping out short-throw projectors, but its latest prototype unquestionably takes the cake. Debuting without so much as a model name, this here DLP beamer -- which, at 93- x 20- x 25-inches, easily doubles as a bench -- throws up a 100-inch 1080p image with just 24-inches of space between it and the wall. Better still, that can scale up to 150-inches by adding just another foot of breathing room -- and just to remind you, we're talking full 1,920 x 1,080 resolution here. Sanyo also tossed in 7,000 lumens of brightness, though mum's the word when it comes to price or nearness to production.

Windows XP transitions out of Mainstream Support phase

It may only be a footnote in the long history of Windows XP, but Microsoft has confirmed today that, as planned, the venerable OS has finally and officially transitioned from the Mainstream Support phase to the Extended Support phase. This, of course, follows a number of extensions to the Mainstream Support phase (which normally only lasts five years), although most users likely won't notice much of a difference as XP moves into this new, more wistful period of life, as they'll still be getting regular security updates and occasional hotfixes (depending on their support plan) all the way until April 8th, 2014 -- or who knows how much longer if the demand is there.

Microsoft's ambidextrous SideWinder X3 mouse available for presale

Still feeling a little less than a'right with dropping $99 on a wireless gaming mouse? Microsoft's newest, the SideWinder X3, is an eight-button wonder that boasts a 2,000 dpi laser-tracking engine, on-the-fly dpi switching between high, medium and low sensitivity, a totally sweet scroll wheel, and a cable. You know, for connecting to your computer and such. The best part? It's ambidextrous (a first for the line), so the southpaw in your life won't feel left out. Starts shipping in May for $39.95.

Packard Bell rolls out 13.4-inch EasyNote Butterfly laptop

While Acer is keeping plenty of its latest and greatest laptops for itself, it's also keeping its Packard Bell subsidiary fairly well supplied with some gear to reshape and rebrand, with this new EasyNote Butterfly model only the latest to surface following a pair of new DOT netbooks. This one steps above netbook territory with a 13.4-inch LED-backlit display, however, along with an unspecified Intel Ultra Low Voltage processor, ATI Mobility Radeon HD4330 graphics, your choice of an SSD or standard hard drive, a multitouch trackpad, optional 3G, and a promised eight hours of battery life. No word on a price just yet, but, as with the netbooks, this one will be reserved for the European market.

First non-Apple mini DisplayPort monitors look suspiciously familiar

We're not sure if Apple will ever succeed in pushing mini DisplayPort on the industry in favor of the full sized version, but Collins America has decided what bandwagon it wants to be on -- it's just announced three new CinemaView displays that feature the smaller connector. The $299 1440 x 900 19-inch, $399 1650 x 1050 20-inch, and $499 1920 x 1080 24-inch displays all feature 3 USB ports, passthrough stereo audio ports, an all-in-one cable, and totally ripped industrial design, but hey -- at least they're cheap. Should be on sale "before September 1."

Skype application for iPhone is official! As it was rumored earlier in the week, its now official and available for download absolutely free on iTunes, App Store now. As with the desktop IM software, Skype to Skype calls will be free and you'd also be able to chat with your contacts and friends using this app. As you would expect it does require access to a WiFi network though. The audio quality is good even through using WiFi which has been a problem with some non-Skype apps providing Skype support. The iPhone version of Skype supports VoIP service, chatting, incoming conference calls but its a shame you won't be able to initate outgoing conference calls.

LG is increasing the buzz on its 13.4mm thick GD900 handset ahead of the upcoming CTIA Wireless Show 2009. The GD900 which you will recall was first shown at the MWC 2009, Barcelona. Its been said that this time, the 7.2 HSPDA slider with world’s first transparent glass (not plastic folks!) keypad will be functional, running LG’s new S-Class UI on the three inch display. GD900 features a vibrational haptic feedback and the transparent keypad seems to double as a touch-sensitive mouse pad. The GD900 will be available in Europe and Asia in May.

Though we don't exactly know how this geeky hacker did it and some of you may find it rather unecessary. It appears that the Sony PSP makes a nice secondary PC status monitor in this hack. Displaying your PCs memory, CPU, CPU temperature status, etc. So for anyone who has a PSP and can't afford yet to get a second monitor for the PC, this could be worthwhile doing :) Another shot after the break.

Back to the Future? Not exactly. It's NASA! Those in America got the chance to enjoy a first look at NASA's new oldschool design Orion spacecraft that will be taking humans back to the surface of the moon by the year 2020. The Orion Exploration Vehicle is part of a new fleet of vehicles that will make 21st Century space exploration possible. Weighing in at more than 8,000 kilograms, the Orion crew exploration vehicle is targeted to begin carrying humans to the International Space Station in 2015 and then to the moon in 2020, fifty years after man first stepped foot on its surface.
