Motorola Atrix 4G

Alongside the announcement of the Samsung Infuse 4G handset, another impressive device was revealed at AT&T Developer Summit today at CES. The Motorola Atrix 4G runs Android 2.2 and is the first to feature a dual-core Tegra 2 processor in the AT&T lineup.

The device first leaked in early December with the name "Olympus" and has a 4" display of qHD resolution (540x960 pixels) and the impressive 1GB RAM. The 16GB internal memory can be expanded via microSD memory cards (up to 32GB are supported).

The Motorola Atrix 4G camera is 5MP - still the standard for high-end smartphones these days. HSPA+ is the best the device can offer on the network connectivity side and a massive 1930 mAh battery is supposed to keep the whole thing buzzing for more than 9 hours of talk time. Surprisingly the weight is kept under control - 136g is a very good achievement considering what's inside.

As an Atrix 4G accessory, Motorola is going to launch what they call a “Webtop”. It transforms the phone to a netbookishly looking device with a 11.6” screen, a full-sized QWERTY keyboard. Using the Webtop with the Atrix 4G will provide additional 8 hours of battery life, thanks to the 36Whr battery included in the unit.

Samsung Infuse 4G

The CES dawn saw another hot-looking smartphone announced, courtesy of Samsung and AT&T. The Samsung i997 Infuse 4G comes to succeed the Samsung i897 Captivate and represents a significant upgrade with its larger display and faster CPU.

Not only does the Samsung i997 Infuse 4G take the display size to the 4.5 inches, but it also introduces a new Super AMOLED technology that should lead to image quality even sweeter than before. Samsung refers to it as Super AMOLED Plus and says that it gets rid of the Pentile matrix in favor of a conventional RGB subpixel layout. According to the South Koreans, this should improve both contrast and outdoor visibility.

The Samsung i997 Infuse 4G also comes with a new, faster Hummingbird CPU, clocked at 1.2 GHz. The handset runs on Android 2.2 (Froyo), despite the fact that 2.3 (Gingerbread) has been available for a month now. The two cameras have also been updated and the Infuse 4G now packs an 8 megapixel primary snapper and a 1.3 megapixel secondary unit.

That and the HSPA+ support is all we can tell you about the Infuse 4G specs so far, but we suppose the rest should be available in just a few hours। We are also hoping to get some pricing and availability estimates for the AT&T-bound Infuse 4G. Information on a possible European version would be more than welcome too.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc may not be announced just yet, but thanks to a massive leak we already know everything about it. The Arc runs on Gingerbread, packs a big 4.2" screen, implements various high-end technologies and comes into very stylish, slim and light body.

Lots of praise for a start, right? It's time to get into the details.

The first thing worth mentioning is the 4.2-inch capacitive display attractively called the Reality display. Previously rumored as being X.LED (whatever that is), now we learn it uses Sony's BRAVIA Mobile Engine, which does real-time noise reduction, sharpness, color management and contrast enhancement on the picture. It has 854x480 pixels resolution and is covered with a scratch-resistant glass. There is still no info on the screen type.

Here's the first XPERIA Arc video ad:

The next important thing is the 8-megapixel auto-focus camera. It uses Sony's Exmor R back-illuminated sensor and is supposed to shoot impressive photos and HD videos. There is a LED flash too.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc

Finally we should definitely congratulate Sony Ericsson on the excellent design. The arc-like design results into only 9mm thickness on the both ends and 8.7mm in the slimmest part. The XPERIA Arc body is quite light too - 117 grams - which is definitely impressive for its measures - but means there will be no metal on the body panels.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and will be upgradeable to 3.0 Honeycomb when the time comes. The rest of the specs are pretty much standard - a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, all-round connectivity options and ports (incl. HDMI), microSD slot with 16GB card included and a 1500 mAh battery.

We also just received a screenshot of the XPERIA Arc doing the Quadrant benchmark. Here you can see how it fares.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc

The XPERIA Arc should be officially announced soon on CES in Las Vegas and is expected to hit the shelves in Q1 this year। The price is still unknown, but it shouldn't be higher than X10's launch price last year.

LG Optimus Black

Today LG unveiled its next flagship - the Android 2.2 Froyo-powered Optimus Black. It utilizes the LG's latest innovation - the 4-inch NOVA display - which is supposed to be the world's brightest screen.

LG are quite mum on the NOVA's technology, but it claims it's the "brightest, clearest and most readable" mobile screen out there with 700 nits of brightness. According to LG the NOVA display consumes 50% less energy than the regular LCDs indoors and the AMOLEDs at full white. These capabilities combined with the 1500 mAh battery should give us some impressive battery life.

The LG Optimus Black is another slim device with 9.2mm of thickness and 106 grams of weight. It packs a 2 megapixel front-facing camera and 5 or 8 megapixel rear one capable of HD video recording. The Android version ticking inside is Froyo masked with the Optimus UI 2.0, but it should get Gingerbread at some time.

LG Optimus Black

It seems LG wasn't satisfied by the world's brightest screen and the first 2 megapixel video-call camera, so it's added another pioneer inside - the Wi-Fi Direct. LG Optimus Black has the innovative Wi-Fi direct feature that allows users to connect devices through Wi-Fi connections without the need of a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Unfortunately, the last claim is quite controversial since Samsung's I9000 Galaxy S has already been Wi-Fi Direct-certified and waits its enabling in the upcoming months.

More details on the LG Optimus Black are expected tomorrow, while the handset should become available in the first half of 2011.

Another thing that LG is preparing to present at CES 2011 is the world's first 4-inch 3D mobile display relying on the parallax barrier technology and does not require 3D glasses. LG promises brighter, smoother and cross-talk-free picture with wider viewing angles.

All this sounds good on paper, but we are waiting to see all this in some real action।

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play

The Mobile World Congress is fast approaching and, understandably, rumors and leaks are starting to intensify. Today we've got another batch of photos of the Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone, which reconfirms its XPERIA allegiance and Gingerbread Android version.

Never mind all those Android 3.0 rumors, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play (which is supposed to be the device real name) is obviously going to run on 2.3 Gingerbread.

We also got confirmation of the 1GHz Qualcomm 7x30A CPU ticking inside the XPERIA Play. The rest will be revealed on the 13 February when the Sony Ericsson press conference will start the MWC 2011. Meanwhile enjoy those high-quality shots of the new smartphone.

LG Optimus B - LTE-enabled

As the clock is ticking until the beginning of this year’s CES, LG is preparing to unveil two more phones. The already known Tegra 2-packing Optimus 2X will be joined by the Optimus Black, also known as the LG B, that leaked less than a month ago.

LG Optimus Black and LG Revolution LG Optimus Black and LG Revolution
LG Optimus Black and LG Revolution

The Optimus Black will feature ultra-slim design with “the best display clarity”, supposedly being Apple’s Retina Display killer. So far it is unknown whether the device will be 4G enabled or which carrier will offer it. What’s for sure though is the 2MP front-facing camera.

The other Android handset that’s going to be revealed at CES is Optimus 2X’s LTE-enabled twin, called LG Revolution. The device is probably going to be released in Verizon’s new LTE network and will remain US-only।

XPERIA X12 Anzu

It seems Sony Ericsson is preparing for a big announcement at CES in Las Vegas. A billboard in Las Vegas suggests a new announcement is imminent and some sources say it may be featuring the previously rumored XPERIA X12 a.k.a. Anzu.

Interestingly, according to SEMC Blog, the X12 will be called XPERIA Arc and will pack 4.2-inch multi-touch X.LED screen with 854x480 resolution, 8 megapixel camera using a Sony Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor, a full set of connectivity options (incl. HDMI). We have no clue what exactly X.LED is, but it's good to see Sony Ericsson is about to jump on the LED technology.

The XPERIA Arc should be only 8.8mm thin, so it may easily become the slimmest smartphone up to date.

Here is another teaser picture from SEMC Blog:

Nokia’s business-oriented E7 smartphone has unfortunately been delayed until early next year. The push back has been justified through the need of delivering the ‘best user experience’. A spokesperson from Nokia stated that the delay was to “ensure the best possible user experience” on the device. For the reason of software dissatisfaction, Sony Ericsson Yendo which was previously announced in June got postponed to February 2011, even after a bunch of promotional pictures has been leaked to several media. This delay happens worldwide. Hopefully, this ‘Walkman player’, 2.6 inch QVGA touchscreen display, 3.5 mm headset jack, ‘Touch TrackID’, Bluetooth, social networking integrated (Facebook, Twitter, Orkut), Google search, 2MP camera and MicroSD card support but without 3G phone sales won’t get too much impact from this delay. Sony Ericsson Yendo might not be as equal as iPhone however, considering its friendly price, this phone might just suit most people needs.

The first phone to run Android 2.3 Gingerbread which unlike their predecessor who only runs on Android 2.2, Google proudly claims Nexus S as the best Android Phone. “Pure Google” That’s the tagline Google is using to promote the Nexus S. The Nexus S’s distribution strategy is more conventional. It’ll be sold at Best Buy for $199 with a two-year T-Mobile contract or $599 with no commitment. The 4-inches screen size is just right which makes it noticeably roomy. The screen uses AMOLED technology, which makes for vivid colors and deep blacks. Another Nexus S feature, its support for a technology known as near-field communications (NFC), it lets the phone communicate wirelessly with other NFC-equipped objects that are no more than 4 inches away. Setting up the phone doesn’t involve much more than entering your Google account name and password, Android then automatically configures services such as Gmail and Google Calendar.
